June 2020- Argentina is a producer of sunflower oil. This cooking oil is preferred by Argentine families and its cheaper than corn cooking oil. Argentine sunflower oil is also appreciated in Chile, Paraguay, and Uruguay traditional clients of the product.

In the last years, the Chilean demand has increased on some occasions. Also, Argentina Cambiemos Administration has planned to expand exports to the Indian market. We cover the harvest and data related to every season, we describe the important market related to Argentine exports. We also will add data for other Argentine media that published data related to the crop.

Key Information on our website:

Record in sunflower production:

In November of 2019, we publish the data that will affect the local market and export too. The market has low prices and local production also added pressure to this because of the high volumes. During the last administration, the sunflower production has expanded, in 2019, the value was 443 USD per year. This last season is 1.94 million hectares. Check all the data with this link:

The sunflower boom exports:

In July of 2018, It was an excellent situation for Argentine sunflower exports because of the bought from Chile, the biggest buyer. The exports quadruply from 13,950 to 59,438 tonnes of sunflower products.  Argentine oil has no access to European markets because the production of Russia and Ukraine captures the biggest part of this market. The possibilities in Sunflower market in India:

The information about the perspective of exporting crude sunflower oil to India was given by Gustavo Idigoras in a conference in Mumbai. The industry has expanded the crushing activity

2020- How is evolving the crop in the last weeks?

Hail hit the sunflower production of Entre Ríos Province:

Information provided by Buenos Aires Grain Exchange said that 250 hectares were damaged by hail in 26th February of 2020. The impact of the damage is about 26% of the production in Entre Ríos province. This part was part of 950 hectares planted in the province. At that moment the harvest was at 30%. In Santa Fe, Sunflower production beat records.

1ST April-2020 Although the hectares planted were lower than years before the excellent yields have made a record in the history of the crop in Santa Fe.

These excellent results have a positive effect on the margin in production before taxes allowing profits. This includes people who rent as owners. This is a good situation because the volume produced is in a good perspective because of the recovery of the international price. The information was researched by Santa Fe´s Grain Exchange.

The data: 108.500 hectares were planted, a 12% lower than the season before, but just 1,5% lower than a year because of the excellent yields. This excellent year only reduced the hectares harvested in 1,5%. The weather permitted the development of the cultivar in every phase with excellent results. The results in yields were 9,5% above of the last season and 12,3% above of the last five years. In volume the production is about 248.365 tonnes in the study area, this is an increase of 7,9% from the last season.

The study considered that in the North of Santa Fe province the revenue is higher than in the center. The highest was 332 USD for the owners of the land, and 202 USD for farmers who rent it. The farmers who rent needed in the center a price of 192 USD per tonne and in the north 144 USD per tonne.

News and background from the previous years:

December 2018- The situation in that year generated a message from CRA (Argentine Farmers Confederation), the idea supported by them is than oligopoly practices made that the local pay for sunflower was lower than in the international market. The harvest in 2018 was negative for the Argentine crop production because of prices sunk in Rotterdard about 17% because of better production in Ukraine and Russia plus 6,5% than 2017. This year before the production was lower in 600,000 tonnes.

This pressure has impacted in Argentine farmers, which also are affected because of the few buyers that are in the local market. The local price is discounted as the production is exported even it not happen. In 2018, the farmer who planted sunflowers have been paid 80 U$D lower than the international price.

The biggest difference between soybean the most expanded market in Argentina and sunflower is the lack of investment and development in the market. Bad prices make it harder to keep planting sunflower in Argentina, even the extraordinary developments in genetics have increased yields locally. CRA said that in these conditions will be very difficult to develop markets abroad or even keep planting in the upcoming year’s sunflower in Argentina.

North-East region received training by ASAGIR for the north of Santa Fe Province, Chaco and, Santiago del Estero.

July 2018- The rentability in the crop was possible because of the elimination of the withheld tax. The north-east zone was benefited because of this, in the north of Santa Fe, Chaco, and Santiago del Estero.

The National Agriculture Technological Institute developed a manual that has the objective to add more farming land and add surface for production. A technical learning event happened in two cities, Saenz Peña located in Chaco province and Avellaneda in North of Santa Fe province. The meeting joined 200 farmers of the region. The learning course was organized by ASAGIR (Sunflower Argentine Association).

The sunflower crop is beneficial in a rotation strategy of usage of land. This is the reason that is planted in this part of the country. The soil characteristics do not allow high yields because rains can easily flood the basement and ruin it. This year, the conditions of climate were excellent for crop conditions because the heavy rains in the summer bring humidity to soils in autumn.

On the middle of 2018 was a certain menace of Downy Mildew a microbe that hurt the crop. However in Argentina still exist specific seeds that resist the problem. The experts like Amelia Bertero suggest the election of the correct seed is fundamental and also claims that seed companies must adapt to necessities of the farmers, middle, and short term cycles are the preferred for it. Amelia also suggests adding fertilizers, to increase in 374 kilos per hectares the yield, consisting in 50 kilos of daimonic plus urea added in the campaign.

At this moment Argentine farmers were enthusiastic because of the worsening results in Ukraine sunflower production that promised better results. In a world that consumes more sunflower in a rate of 3,9% per year, Argentina can produce more sunflower because can expand its production in the north-east. In this part of the country, sunflowers could have equal or better results than soybean or corn have.
